In this tutorial I will show you how to turn a simple black background into a glossy 3d background. As always, the layered Photoshop file is available for download at the end of tutorial.
Final Image preview
Below is the final preview of the image.

Step 1:
Create a new document, roughly about 500 px by 500 pixels, with white or transparent background. Fill the layer with #3c3c3c color.

Step 2:
Right click first layer and select “duplicate layer”. This will create a duplicate layer of first layer. Set foreground color to #b7b7b7.

Now Select “Ellipse Tool” with “Fill pixels”.

and draw a large circular shape.

change layer mode to “Multiply” and set opacity to 30%. Now it looks like this.

Right click the layer and apply following layer style.

That’s it, you’ve done it. This is how background looks now:
